DASH FOR CASH MAKES SI'S LIST OF "AMAZING ANIMALS"

July 20, 2005,  AQHA Hall of Fame racehorse "Dash For Cash" has been included on Sports Illustrated's list of 25 amazing animals, part of the magazine's special summer double issue dated July 11-18.

Bred by the late B.F. Phillips Jr.,
"Dash For Cash" was American Quarter Horse racing's World Champion in 1976 and 1977, as the stallion by "Rocket Wrangler" won 21 of 25 races, including the Champion of Champions (G1) twice.  He also passed his speed to his offspring, as his 1,370 foals have earned nearly $40 million from 19 crops and include 16 champions.  "Dash For Cash" died from complications related to equine protozoal myeloencephalitis in May 1996.

Horses comprise 12 of the 25 animals on the list, which includes seven dogs, two bulls, one bird, one fish, one dolphin and one cat. The list was compiled by the Sports Illustrated editorial staff, which evaluated a number of different factors in its selection process.

There were three other racehorses on the list: Thoroughbreds - "
Seabiscuit", "Ruffian", and 1973 Triple Crown winner "Secretariat". Also, one other American Quarter Horse made the list -- "Gills Bay Boy", who is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Nicknamed Scamper, "Gills Bay Boy" helped Charmayne James earn 10 consecutive gold buckles in barrel racing from 1984-93. He also earned AQHA's Silver Spur Award, which recognizes horses who are cast into the national spotlight or who significantly and positively impact a person's life.
